This was kind of a rough patch for me since I hadn’t fleshed out the flashback in my mind before committing to paper. When I imagined it, these scenes were quick and simple and just something to show the Everett’s family dying. As I’m writing it, however, it’s turning into its own little movie. Yeah, I’m not keeping this under 120 pages in my first draft.
Yet, while the writing is slow going, writing these “unknown” areas does offer a few pleasant surprises. I’ve suddenly discovered a little bit more about Bao and his forthrightness and bravery. It makes his death a little more meaningful. Long is a little bit of a non-entity in the flashback so far, so the balancing might have to be tweaked a little, but overall, I’m liking it. I might make the Overseer Australian just to make the performance more interesting.
